Lafayette/BART Town Center Pathway & Bike Station

Lafayette

Downtown Congestion Reduction Plan

Project Summary
In 2016, the City of Lafayette and the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) partnered on a joint grant funding application to develop a better walking and cycling connection between Downtown Lafayette and the centrally-located BART train station. I authored the grant application in consultation with BART colleagues and we successfully secured over $2 million in grant funding to finance the project design and construction. Upon receiving the grant award, I became planning and project manager to facilitate project implementation, working with a variety of stakeholders including BART, the adjacent housing developer, and utility companies with ownership and jurisdiction overlays across the project site.

Treat grants as their own separate project, complete with scope of work, funding plan, stakeholder list, goals, objectives, schedule, risk analysis, etc.

Quality grant applications require preparation and planning very similar to the project itself, especially when coordinating a joint interagency application. This is especially critical when pursuing funding programs with in-depth, complex application requirements, to maintain continuity because the time between funding application and project initiation could span months or even years.
